Salvo di Pietraganzili, accompanied by Dr. Jelena Jovivoc and Dr. Branko Lutovac, met with the center’s director to discuss the progress and details of the project submitted to the OMDP to purchase CARPEDIEM, a neonatal dialysis device for hospitalized Montenegrin children.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a severe and often life-threatening condition in critically ill neonates, especially in those born prematurely or with congenital kidney anomalies. AKI is also very common due to perinatal asphyxia and neonatal sepsis, further increasing the need for specialized treatment. Standard dialysis machines are not suited for such small patients, significantly limiting treatment options. CARPEDIEM is the only neonatal-specific hemodialysis device, developed in Italy making it uniquely tailored to the needs of this population.

Currently, Montenegro lacks the capacity to provide not only neonatal hemodialysis but also acute peritoneal dialysis in neonates, requiring patients to be transferred abroad, which is associated with significant medical and financial burdens.

By funding the procurement of the CARPEDIEM machine, the Order of Malta will be contributing to establish the first neonatal hemodialysis service in the country, saving lives and improving patient outcomes.

The introduction of this technology would be a groundbreaking advancement for neonatal critical care in Montenegro, ensuring life-saving treatment for the most vulnerable patients.

The integration of the CARPEDIEM system will be also accompanied by a technical training in Italy for Montenegrin anesthesiologists, neonatologists, and nephrologist to acquire the skills for ultrasound-guided catheter placement.

Currently, there dott. Lutovac is the only physician at the hospital performing dialysis, from central venous access to therapy management and all technical details. Expanding the expertise across disciplines is essential for implementing a multidisciplinary approach to neonatal and pediatric AKI care.

On July 10, Ambassador Narciso Salvo di Pietraganzili, and Ratka Sekulovic, the Embassy Senior Advisor, visited the Institute of Children's Diseases, part of the PHI Clinical Center of Montenegro.
["GET
